People's Artist Ngo Hoang Quan was born into a musical family in Hanoi. He started studying the cello with his father, Professor and People’s Teacher Hoang Duong, before attending the Vietnam National Academy of Music under the guidance of Professor People's Artist Bui Gia Tuong. He graduated with honors in Cello Performance in 1974. In 1976, he was chosen to study at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory of Music in Moscow, Russia under Professor Stephan Kalijanov, a former assistant of world-renowned cellist Professor Mstislav Rostropovitch.
Mr. Quan has been a soloist and violoncello principal of the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra since 1982. He was selected to participate in the 1986 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow and the J. S. Bach Competition in Leipzig in 1988. He has since performed in Russia, Japan, Macedonia, China, Korea, and Germany. In 1993, he was invited by the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra to perform as guest soloist in Thailand. In November 1999, he played with the Vienna Volksoper Symphony Orchestra in Ho Chi Minh City. In 2000, he performed as a soloist with the Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra.
Mr. Quan was appointed Deputy Director of the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra in 2001. From 2003 to 2011, he was Director of this Orchestra. From 2011-2016, he was Deputy Director of the Vietnam Department of Performing Arts of Culture, Sports and Tourism Ministry.
Mr. Quan is currently Executive Director of Vietnam Connection Music Festival.
